At the heart of the novel is the Lewis family. Jacqueline, the matriarch, is a successful lawyer and devoted mother. Her husband, William, is a respected doctor. Their son, Luke, is a talented artist struggling to find his place in the world. And their daughter, Naomi, is a bright and ambitious college student grappling with her own identity.

The Parkers are a working-class family living in the same neighborhood as the Lewises. Brenda, the mother, is a nurse who works long hours to support her family. Her husband, Edward, is a struggling musician. Their son, Jamal, is a gifted athlete with dreams of playing professional basketball. And their daughter, Leah, is a shy and introspective teenager.

The Joneses are an affluent African American family who have recently moved into the neighborhood. Victoria, the mother, is a successful businesswoman. Her husband, David, is a high-powered lawyer. Their daughter, Anya, is a fashion icon with a large social media following. And their son, Miles, is a charming and intelligent young man.

As the lives of these three families intersect, their secrets and prejudices are laid bare. Jacqueline struggles to reconcile her progressive values with her own biases. Brenda is haunted by the racism she has experienced throughout her life. And Victoria grapples with the complexities of being a black woman in a white world.

What We Want to Talk About is a powerful and moving novel that explores the complexities of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America today. Through the lens of three interconnected families, the book offers a nuanced and thought-provoking exploration of the human condition.
